TikTok and the Wheelers

More rough sketches....

I didn't forget the bear, colton, I'm still working on it. In the book and in the movie, Tick tock was a brawny, roly fellow. But in the old carton I rememberred from when I was a kid he was a little, diminuitive thing with a self-important thinking mechanism, so thats probably where I got this design from. The wheelers are pretty much the same as in the movie, although in the book they are so imposing and obscene because they now if people weren't intimidated by then they'd realize they had no able limbs to fight with and were in fact harmless.

Joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea....

I'm giving it to him tommorow; hopefully he doesn't make an unlikley inspection of said blog until after lunch tommorow. Why am I putting it on now and leaving it to chance? I'll leave that question to the philosophers. I have another card on the way, but I won't put it up until it's been given to the receiptant. Oh, and I'll put the wheelers on my to do list, Sean, right after a malignant bear for my baby brother....

The Nome King

The Nome king from the third book. Unforetunatley of lost enough interest to read any of the other books of the series, it's already gotten a bit repetitive. Anyway, I didn't want the nome to look overly menacing, but rather demure looking. It was somewhat inspired by Davy Jones from the sequel to Pirates, when he takes the pronounced puff of his pipe. My interpretation of the king is that he has so much clout and is so confident in his victory that he plays games with his opponents, giving them a sporting chance.

Below are just some rough sketches of my designs of some witch and warlock eye candy. I liked the roughs so much I didn't want to go over them again. Female witches have the pointy ears, and male witches (warlocks), have hooves. The females have slightly less difficulty blending in...

The Land Of Oz

I apologize for having nothing but rough sketches lately. An animation job has a significant effect on your time for personal projects. As I write this sentence it is 2:30 in the morning, and I have a huge deadline in two days.

Anyway, this is from the second oz book, where they try to find the true succesor to the throne of the emearald city. The stories were, as it turns out, polictical propeganda. I'm working on the villains of this book; an army of women who invade oz and cause it to go to seed by putting the men in the home. Anti-womens lib commentary from the early twentieth century, perhaps?

Foster's nominated episode

http://www.cartoonnetwork.com/tv_shows/video/index.html?/fosters/index

Hear's a link to a Foster's episode that's nominated for an episode. I swear, as long Foster's is on the air, the world can be a happy place in spite of it all. Not only are the designs crisp and the animation good (for flash), but more importantly the characters are compeltely irresistable. You can put any of them in the most mundane situation and they can fly with it.

Hears a rendition two new characters winners from the second season, Goo (who makes her debut in the nominated episode) and the delightfully repugnant cheese. They've certanly gotten a lot of milleage out of the little guy (look for him on youtube).

The two officers are for my "without a clue" animatic. I figured I'd have to design them at some point. I decided to make they're bodies a big black sillhouette, with arms only visible when to the side of them, kind of like the thugs from the great "Trippletts of Bellville", now that I think of it.

lion heads

An idea for a short subject a year back or so. It's based on how I'd always see lion faces in tiled pattearns, originating from the floor of my grandmother's kitchen. Hopefully I'll be able to get the animatic going once I finish the one for "without a clue". When you have so many little ideas at once, I guess all you can hope to do is work on one when the inspiration for it kicks in and then set it aside until something serious with it arises.

Faces on the bus home. Now that I'm commuting there's no excuse not to do this....

oz's throneroom

For those unfamiliar, the "wizard" only permitted each character to see him sepeprately, and he had a different form each time; Dorothy saw a giant head, the scarecrow saw a beautifal woman, the timan a scary monster and the lion a talking flame....

Scarecrow and Toto

I'm slowly being able to sleep at night with some of the animation I've been doing at work. I took it home and worked on it this weekend, which definitely gives you more breathing space to work the shots out.

Anyway, the scarecrow took me a while to get something I liked. I know it's a cliche, but I just couldn't see him with anything other then the straw hat (same with the funnel hat for the tinman). The think at the bottom is a monster from the original story called a Kahlidahs (half tiger, half bear.

Dorothy and the Tinman

So much left to do this week. I'll be working at home this weekend to catchup. I suppose that's normal for animator; I'm sure I'll toughen up in a month or so.

Anyway, I'm embarrassed to realize I haven't put any links on my site. Being fairly new at this, what's the ettiquette to giving peoples names out? If somebody puts a comment on your blog, is it safe to put there link on yours?

The lion

And here's the lion. Yep....

Sure is slow when you're working. Put in twelve hours today. Still I'm sure I'll be topping it soon....

witch of the west

I only got one done tonight. This is somewhat of a tribute to my favorite villain; zig-zag from "the thief and the cobbler". She's kind of similar in with the huge robe coverring everything but her head and her spidery hands. I wanted to make them extra creepy. Her fur is made from a Kahlidahs; which will only mean something to those familiar with the book.

I recall the witches helpless subjects dressed in yellow (oz is green, the munchins blue), so I figured anything relating to her would have a yellowish pallette.

I unnoficially accepted some small freelance concept work, which may have been more then I can chew on top of my day job. Bottom line I may have to abandon my blog for a while.

rough oz

Here's some (very) rough sketches for some oz characters. Albeit too rough to make out some of them, perhaps, but it'll take me a while to get the finished ones up, so I here's some thumbnails that I liked while I worked on them at my family's wedding.

am I crossing the good taste border here? it's hard to gauge....

Sorry....

A posterior of too much potency"

The poem was probably unnecesary...

full FF animation

Here's both haves of the final fantasy test, with Rob Paulson dialougue.
I start my animation job tommorow! I realize I going to have to be a bit more economic with my work animation (the quota's eight seconds a day)

Anyway, go to these links to see the animation

Plus, here's my personifications of the seven deadly sins. If you can't tell who's who, I probably have to redesign them
